Plus, take a look at the actors playing them
By GQ Staff
After three successful seasons of Narcos, Netflix's drug cartel drama presses a reset button with its latest season. Narcos: Mexico has a new cast, location and talks about the origins of the modern drug war that happened in the 1980s. While the story is technically new, the events that are shown in the fourth season -- or as the showrunners would like to say, the first season of Narcos: Mexico -- are parallel to what was happening in Colombia with Pablo Escobar. The series follows the rise of the Guadalajara Cartel in the early 1980s led by Miguel ?ngel F?lix Gallardo and the shocking events that unfold as an American DEA Agent Kiki Camarena and other officials try to bring him down. Here are some of the characters of Narcos: Mexico and the real people they are based on.
1. Diego Luna as Miguel ?ngel F?lix Gallardo
Diego Luna plays Miguel ?ngel F?lix Gallardo, commonly referred to as El Padrino. Gallardo founded the Guadalajara Cartel in the 1980s. While the drug cartels were divided amongst different plazas in Mexico, it was Miguel Gallardo who managed to bring everyone together -- including Mexican intelligence agency Direcci?n Federal de Seguridad (DFS) -- to form a cohesive organisation.
2. Michael Pe?a as Kiki Camarena
Pe?a, who has previously been a part of blockbusters like Ant-Man and Million Dollar Baby, plays Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent Kiki Camarena in Narcos: Mexico. Kiki was deployed at Guadalajara at the same time during the rise of Miguel Gallardo's cartel. A former U.S. Marine and police officer, Camarena went undercover for the DEA. Though he was able to take down a drug farm with the annual turnover of $8 billion, he was later found out and horrendously tortured before being dumped in the Mexican countryside. In 1988, he was featured on the cover of Time Magazine.
3. Alyssa Diaz as Mika Camarena
Diaz plays Mika Camarena, wife of DEA Agent Kiki Camarena. She and her children were living in Guadalajara during Miguel Gallardo's rise in the Mexico drug cartel. In real life, Mika and Kiki Camarena have three sons.
4. Joaqu?n Cos?o as Ernesto Fonseca Carrillo (Don Neto)
