Surfing: Gabriel Medina (BRA) has won the Bronze
With the waves improving in both size and consistency, 3x World Champion Gabriel Medina of Brazil put on quite a show en route to winning the Bronze Medal.
After failing to find a second scoing wave in his semi-final heat, Medina (BRA) was throwing away 7.5s in his Bronze Medal heat against Peru's Alonso Correa. Wether he was double hand-dragging in the day's deepest barrels or attempting a high flying alley-oop over nearly dry reef, the Brazilian goofy foot was the definition of high performance surfing this heat. He won with a pair of7.77s, one earned courtesy of the day's most impressive tube to date and the other with a wave that featured 4 consecutive turns, each one different from the next but all of them undeniably committed and progressive.
Correa (PER) took an early lead thanks to some proper tube time and stylish cutbacks but his total heat score of 12.43 was no match for a very in form Medina.
With the win, Medina (BRA) has improved on his 4th place finish in Tokyo and swapped it out for a Bronze here at Teahupo'o.

Surfing: Weston-Webb of Brazil has advanced to the finals
Using full rail turns and some keen tube riding acumen, Tatiana Weston-Webb of Brazil has posted the day's highest single wave score (an 8.33) and total heat score (a 13.66) on her way to winning her semi-final heat. She will surf later for gold against Caroline Marks of the United States.
Heat #2 of the Women's semi-finals was actually over well before the final horn sounded. Weston-Webb (BRA) had a slight lead early and was sitting with priority when Costa Rica's Brisa Hennessy flagrantly interferred, dropping in on Weston-Webb (BRA)as the two women caught the same wave. The penalty for the accidental mishap meant that Hennessy (CRC) could only have one scoring wave count for her total heat score. As soon as Weston-Webb had a total heat score over 10.00, the heat was effectively over.
Despite making the fatal gaff, Hennessy (CRC)surfed with conviction on her backhand and turned in the heat's second highest scoring wave (a 6.17) thanks to a series of strong turns that threw buckets of roiling whitewater over the back of the wave.
Speaking with surf reporter Ash Tulloch after her win, Weston-Webb (BRA) offered, "Very happy I got to showcase my surfing. I really feel like I’m getting a handle of this wave and I’m glad it’s showing. For our country this means so much and I can’t wait to represent Brazil in the final.”

Surfing: Caroline Marks of Team USA reflects on having a chance at gold
Speaking with Olympics.com surf reporter Ash Tulloch on scene in Tahiti, Marks (USA) had this to say after advancing to the gold medal heat. "I’m so happy. It feels so good...I was really emotional about not medaling in Tokyo so I’m going to stop talking now because I’ll get emotional now that I know I’m going to get one. I sliced my foot a few times on the reef so I’m glad it worked out. I’m just so happy.Best feeling ever- such a big heat. I’ve had some big moments in my career and that win felt pretty big. Stoked I got the score."

Surfing: Marks (USA) has advanced to the Women's finals
Caroline Marks of the United States will surf for gold.
Marks (USA) and Johanne Defay of Team France both had a combined heat score of 12.17 in Women's semi-final heat #1 but the tie-breaker is settled by the best single wave score and that belonged to Marks with her heat best 7.0. That score was earned by catching one of the heat's biggest waves, pulling into a clean frontside barrel, exiting and carving back to the power source, and then snapping a crisp hammer off the lip to closeout the ride. It was easily the most complete ride of the heat.
Defay (FRA), surfing on her backhand, exclusively used turns to earn her points. Vertical and powerful turns perfectly timed with the crashing lip was her calling card in this heat. She was surfing fast and fluid and earned her best wave score, a 6.50, on a wave where she only performed 2 maneuvers, a near vertical snap in the pocket followed by the most radical turn of the heat, a fins-out slash into the closeout section before free-falling with the white water to the bottom of the wave and riding away.

Surfing: Jack Robinson (AUS) wins semi-final heat, will surf for gold
Australian Jack Robinson found the best barrel of the day so far and is now headed for the finals. The worst Robinson (AUS) can do is a silver medal.
Heat #2 of the Men's semis pittedRobinson (AUS) against Brazil's Gabriel Medina. Medina (BRA) took the early lead with a 6.3. It was one of the biggest waves of the morning and he surfed it with marked precision, flowing a carving top turn into a radical, fins-free snap into the close-out section. That was it, however, for the 3x World Champion. He never caught another scoring wave.
Robinson (AUS), on the other hand, stayed active in the lineup and caught several waves, including the aforementioned barrel. The tube time earned him a heat best wave score of 7.83 and he knew it- snapping his fingers with stoke after exiting the barrel and before banging a big lip bash into the closeout section, his board free falling to the bottom of the wave before riding away cleanly. His first wave score, a 4.5, proved to be his second best ride, giving him a heat total of 12.33.
Robinson (AUS) will surf against Kauli Vaast of France in the Men's final later today.

Athletics: Duplantis - "Such an out of body experience"
Here's the immediate reaction fromMondo Duplantis after his remarkable 6.25m pole vault:
“I haven’t processed how fantastic that moment was. It’s one of those things that don’t really feel real, such an out of body experience. It’s still hard to kind of land right now.
"What can I say? I just broke a world record at the Olympics, biggest possible stage for a pole vaulter. The biggest dream since a kid was to break the world record at the Olympics, and I’ve been able to do that in front of the most ridiculous crowd I’ve ever competed in front of.
“I tried to clear my thoughts as much as I could. The crowd was going crazy. It was so loud in there, it sounded like an American football game. I have a little bit of experience being in a 100,000 capacity stadium, but I was never the centre of attention. Just trying to channel the energy everybody was giving me, and they were giving me a lot of it. It worked out.”

Surfing: Kauli Vaast (FRA) will surf for gold
Team France's Kauli Vaast has advanced to the finals. He will surf later today for a gold medal.
With a rising swell offering both tubes and some open-faces for turns, Vaast (FRA), who grew up surfing Teahupo'o, flexed his local knoweldge in heat #1 of the Men's semi-finals against Peru's Alonso Correaand used a strong combo of tube time and gouging, top turns to punch his ticket to the finals
Vaast's best wave, a 5.83, came after pulling into a crisp, clean tube direct from takeoff, exiting, cutting back to the pocket and then slamming it off the close-out section, blowing his fins out of the back of the wave. He backed it up with a5.13 courtesy of the heat's longest tube, albeit with a slighlty messy exit. His total heat score was a winning 10.96. You could hear the crowd in the channel errupting with cheers as the horn blasted signifying the end of the heat.
For his part, Correa (PER) kept it close until the very end, taking off on a wave in the final seconds that gave him a chance to pull out the win. The goofy foot managed to find a few barrels- including the biggest, cleanest one of the heat- and one particularly sylish layback snap but never found the consistency nor high perforamnce turns neccesary to matchVaast (FRA).He finished with a best wave score of 5.67and a total heat score of 9.60.
